We used 5 different wires: rope, electrical wire, twine, heavy plastic wire and wool.
We found that the heavy blue plastic wire carried sound the best having tested all give with one person inside the other outside the classroom door.
Lava Lamp Experiment
Senior Infants tried out a 'Lava Lamp' Experiment today. They looked at lava lamps online prior to beginning their experiment and they predicted what might happen with the materials provided to them. They poured vegetable oil and water into plastic bottles through a funnel. They discovered that the oil was less dense than the water and appeared to float on top of it. They then added a few drops of food colouring to the bottle and allowed it to mix with the water at the bottom. The final step was adding a fizzy tablet (Alka-Seltzer) to the bottle to create bubbles. We got our best results when we brought the 'lamps' closer to a window or shone a torch through the bottle. We also recommend only using a tiny amount of food colouring and that you wait patiently for it to get to the bottom of the bottle!
